CD1 - Perfect stuff for getting in the Christmas mood this. Close your eyes... no, actually, don't do that or you won't be able to read this review. Alright then, just imagine... you're wrapping your presents, wishing to god that you'd bought more box-shaped ones instead of things that are going to look like they've been wrapped by a creature with no thumbs (no? Oh well, that must just be me then); you've just managed to lose the scissors and you're fed up to the back teeth of having to find the end of the sticky tape EVERY time you want to bite another piece off. You're just thinking about joining the Ebenezer Scrooge fan club when, joy of joys, something makes you put CD1 on. Can you hear the dulcet tones of Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and the rest? They'll see you alright. There now, don't you feel better?
CD2 - More of the same on this disc. Just imagine it's Christmas Eve then. You've just got back from some last-minute shopping, an experience that has left you frazzled and at the end of your Yuletide tether to the point where you could cheerfully tell Santa where he can stick his mince pie and glass of brandy... you need a quick dose of Christmas spirit and you need it fast. Someone, get CD2 on! There - I defy anyone to listen to 'Jingle Bell Rock' and not want to dance around their living room to it. By the time you get to 'Away in a Manger' you'll be wishing it was the middle of August and you still had all this to look forward to!
CD3 - OK, so now it's Christmas Day. You've opened your presents, you've been left hideously disappointed and you're giving very serious consideration to putting a hit out on Santa Claus as a result. To make matters worse, your in-laws have just turned up. Now you're going to have to be polite about that Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer cardigan they bought you. The day's becoming stressful and you haven't even started cooking lunch yet. However, never fear - CD3 is here! Guaranteed to put a smile on any face, this contains some fabulously fun tracks. Personally speaking, if I never hear the Singing Dogs or the Chipmunks ever again I will die a happy man, but that's just me. The disc ends with the 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy', which is perfect if there's a mother-in-law, a daughter-in-law or some other festive trouble-maker getting right up your nose. Remember that bit in 'Fawlty Towers', where Basil puts that tune on for Sybil? Well, just think of that. Come on, you've got to smile at that!
CD4 - This combines popular Christmas songs with traditional carols, all of them sung very well by the 'CRS Players'. I don't know who they are but they do a perfectly respectable job of bringing new life to some tired old songs. In any case, you're not going to give a monkey's what they sound like by the time this disc goes on. You'll have pulled off the perfect lunch by now and will be receiving compliments from left, right and centre. Your mother-in-law, daughter-in-law or some other festive trouble-maker will be talking about organising a military coup to put you on the throne by this time. Life is great! Fair enough, you may well have nodded off after that second glass of eggnog and this could in fact all be a dream... but if it is, can you imagine what listening to a sultry CRS Player singing 'Santa Baby' is going to do to that dream?! Santa looks just like Siobhan Fahey in my dreams, I don't know about yours.
CD5 - Well, they've gone. They don't know it yet, but they've even been tricked into taking that hideous Rudolph cardigan with them. You did it! Another Christmas passes by without major incident. There'll be no appearances at the Old Bailey early next year to answer a charge of murder and you're still talking to ALL of your relations! Why not put your feet up in celebration of just how wonderful you are and have a nice, relaxed listen to this final disc? Go on, there's nobody else around, just you. Now then, how does it go? Ah yes: 'Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen by the Sea'. Go on - you know you want to!
