Think of Detroit, Michigan and what springs to mind? Cold winters, the Detroit Pistons and Tamla Motown, perhaps.

The music that has characterised the city down the years has generally been melodic and soulful, but there was a period during the early 70s, while Gamble and Huff were crafting their super-slick productions over in Philadelphia, when Detroit was at the forefront of another style of steppin' - an earthy, four-to-the-floor sound which became known as just plain funk!
At the forefront of this movement was a famous son of Detroit, George Clinton, who carefully acquired the knowledge handed down during the late 60s by the Godfather himself, James Brown, and created his own brand of the music, P- Funk. The label which captured this formative period best was the Westbound label, from whose catalogue this compilation is culled.
Many of the selections are performed by Clinton sidemen.

Represented here are artists and styles who later provided the soundtrack to an era. Before the Parliament/Funkadelic explosion happened, before Disco-Funk had smoothed out the raw edges to the point where it became antiseptic - before all this, there was Westbound Funk... gettin' it off!
