On this, the fourth Big Phat Band CD, there's a lot to listen to. Gordon Goodwin's arrangements are always top notch and it's a treat to follow how his ideas unfold in the course of a piece: there's always enough twists to a theme to keep you interested in what's coming next. The musicianship, as always, is first tier as is the production value, this CD is, like other Phat Band CDs, is clean-sounding and crisp where it's supposed to be and round and, well, Phat, where "it's" supposed to be. The soloists are always on the money, the ensemble playing in various sections of the band is a delight, the ryhthm section is tight, it's just a treat to hear the sound of this CD. There are many "nods" to the history of jazz on this album but it doesn't get stuck in any one of them and remains completely fresh because of that. Even the old iconic workhorse classic like "Rhapsody In Blue", which closes out the album, gets a brand new set of clothes but doesn't loose any of its beauty or style in the re-telling.

If there is one bad thing to say about any Big Phat Band album is that these guys make hard charts sound easy, but that's entirely due to high calibre of their musicianship. I've heard the band live, as well as other individual performances and projects by various Big Phat Band Band members, and I have to tell you two things: (#1) buy any and all music that comes out of anybody associated with The Big Phat Band if you want both an education and great listening experience amd (#2) go see them live!

Props should also be given to Gordon Goodwin and The Big Phat Band for all they do for musical education in the schools. With teachers like them the future of jazz music and the Art of The Big Band is in pretty darn good hands! ~ Ronald Housley -- Amazon.com
