The theme Rockin’ Chair that had been composed for her by Hoagy Carmichael in 1932 earned Mildred Bailey her nickname “The Rockin’ Chair Lady” (that matched perfectly with her imposing figure!). At the beginning of her career, she was inspired by Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, however, her personality makes her the only peer of the great black singers of the pre-war era. Her voice is very soft, at ease in the high range, her singing subtle without affectation. Her feeling for swing and blues is beyond dispute and earned her the nickname of "Mrs. Swing" after her marriage to xylofonist R.N. ("Mr. Swing")
