On the Corner was originally released on October 11, 1972 and was scored by critics at the time. However, it proved to be a musical forerunner to styles such as post punk, hip-hop, and drum & bass. The album also demonstrated techniques of musique concrète, a technique producer Teo Macero learned while studying with Otto Luening at Columbia University's Computer Music Center. Davis and Macero also cited Karlheinz Stockhausen as an influence on the album, as well as experimental cellist Paul Buckmaster.

Recorded June 1 & 6 and July 7, 1972 at Columbia Studio E, New York City.
