This is a collection of rare demos recorded by legendary band Mojave 3 (led by Neil Halstead of Slowdive) for their first two albums, Ask Me Tomorrow and Out of Tune. As far as I can tell, the only two of the demos that made it onto the final cut for the albums were "Mercy" and "Keep it All Hid." So that means 13 brand new gorgeous Mojave 3 songs.

As for quality, with demos one has low expectations. These range from sounding lo-fi but extremely listenable to very polished and professional. Overall, I'd give it a B rating in sound (and that's just so people don't expect "studio sound" on all the cuts, but in fact this is one of the most listenable demos I've come across, with the older cuts sounding the most lo-fi, but in fact that was their sound at the time just coming out of Slowdive, and none of those songs in quality would sound out of place on an originally mastered Slowdive album). The later cuts sound clean and polished.

In quality of the music, I'd give it an A, especially if you're a Mojave 3 fan (you just wish they could have put out 2 disc albums so all of these could have been included). As a huge fan I find each one a great new addition to the canon. I have listened and listened to my old Mojave 3, Slowdive, and Neil Halstead albums so much that I decided to go on a mission to find other materials that must exist out there, and hit the jackpot on quite a few.

And for fans of this band and of Neil Halstead, I read a translation of an interview with Neil in April of 2011 saying he had a solo album that should be ready by the end of the year, and that Mojave 3 would also have a new album out around the same time. He also clarified that Mojave 3 never broke up and really enjoy playing together (they played several shows this summer and last), and they've all just been too busy with their own side projects over the past few years to put together a new album, so fans of this band and Neil's extraordinary genius should be in for a double treat sometime soon.

In the meantime, enjoy hearing the gorgeous beginnings--in these demos you can hear exactly how they transitioned from Slowdive to Mojave 3, and the laid back lushness of it all shines through, even in demo form. Enjoy!
